What exactly is “Apis Mellifera”?
“Apis Mellifera” is the Latin name for the honeybee and is the brand name for our range of skin and hair care products based on the two natural extracts we use from the beehive. For further details please see What Is Apis Mellifera?
What are Alvarium and Biomellifera?
These are two special extracts from the beehive which Robert Davidson Jnr discovered and isolated while trying to determine why a beehive is so resistant to disease. They are made up of organic hydrocarbons and proteins that are naturally produced by bees and are extracted from the hive using Certified Organic methods. Through testing we have determined that these extracts contain Coic Acid with antifungal properties, Caffeic Acid which has been effective against tumours, bacteria and viruses as well as having anti-inflammatory properties, and Linoleic Acid which is used to treat such conditions as eczema and acne.
While they have always been the main active ingredients in our products they have only recently been named.
Does your honey have any artificial ingredients?
No, all our honey is free from additives, preservatives, artificial colours and flavours and does not contain any cortisone or steroids.
Does your honey contain any added sugar?
Our company is registered certified organic and we use quality management practices. We do not add sugar to our honey products.
What is Pollenaze and how does it help?
Pollenaze is a blend of naturally potentiated pollen and pure NZ honey which may increase general health and wellbeing and reduce the symptoms of arthritis. Please see the Pollenaze product page and Allergy and Health Advice page for more information.
Can I take Davidson’s products if I am diabetic?
We have numerous diabetics using our health food range with most building up slowly to two teaspoons a day and reporting no adverse effects to blood sugar levels. We recommend you monitor your blood sugar while taking these products but most users find that no change has occurred while taking these products.
If you are unsure of the effect our health food range will have on your condition, we strongly recommend that you check first with your health professional.
Can I take Davidson’s products if I have allergies?

Does your skin care range have any alcohol or perfumes in them?

How will the skin care range help me?

Are there any side effects from your products?

Where are Davidson’s Apiaries products made?
All of our products are made in our factory in Timaru, New Zealand and where possible we use jars and packaging made in NZ as well.
Where do your ingredients come from?
All our ingredients from the skin care range to the honey and pollen are sourced in NZ with the honey predominantly coming from beekeepers across the South Island.
Why don’t you produce your own honey?
Davidson’s Apiaries has previously had over 150 beehives as part of it’s operations but unfortunately we were hit hard by both CCD and the varroa mite over several years. As we were committed to remaining an organic honey business we had to make the decision to cease our own production and source our organic honey from those faring better than us. We hope to resume production in the future when stronger bees can be established
What exactly do you mean when you say your products are ‘organic’?
Our honey is certified organic and the manufacturing process for our propolis is certified with AsureQuality. We abide by the following bodies when making our organic products – The Fair Trading Act 1986 covers false advertising in labelling. The Commerce Commission regulates the organic status of food. New Zealand Food Safety produced a paper on their organic food policy in 2008. Biogrow and AsureQuality, which are the two main accreditation providers for organics in New Zealand, also have their own rules which we adhere to.
As a general rule of thumb food can be labelled organic if the process and manufacture of the food is accomplished without chemical additives and is GM free.
Certified organic must be 98% certified organic.
Some customers have also asked up about how Varroa mite could potentially effect our business. In the case of Varroa mite and organics – organic beekeepers must use biological means of control and not chemical means. Organic beekeepers use a very complicated system of spraying and hive management to control the Varroa and this is why the price of certified organic honey has doubled in just 5 years.
Thymol is considered to be the only organic control that is effective but it stinks and taints the honey so the organic beekeeper has to be very careful to treat the hive out of season so that the thymol doesn’t taint the honey. Thymol is a compound extracted from thyme oil and has strong antimicrobial, antifungal and antibacterial properties.
